June 03, 2009 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON ? Head coach Glenn Michibata of the Princeton men's tennis team has
announced a four-man incoming class for the fall of 2009. TennisRecruiting.net
ranks the class No. 22 in all of Division I.
The class includes Michael Lin, Matt Siow and Matt Spindler, all Californians, as well as Maltese player Matija Pecotic.
Lin, from Torrey Pines High in San Diego, Calif., played on a state divisional championship team as a freshman and senior and was a divisional finalist as a sophomore and junior. Lin served as team captain during his senior season at Torrey Pines and was the team's rookie of the year in 2006 and player of the year in 2007 and 2008. In his last three seasons, Lin was a finalist in the league's individual tournament, winning it in 2008. Lin's sister Rebecca is a rising senior tennis player at Rice.
Pecotic was a consistent youth champion in Malta from the under-10 through the under-18 age groups and is currently ranked No. 2 among senior tennis players in his country. Pecotic represented Malta at the 2007 Games of the Small States of Europe in Monaco and attends Verdala International School.
Siow, from University High in Irvine, Calif., played on a high school team that won state divisional team titles in 2007 and 2008 while also making it to the final in 2006. In 2009, the team was an NHSTAA All-America champion. Individually, Siow was a league singles finalist as a freshman, was all-county in singles as a junior and senior and was the league doubles champion his final two seasons. In Siow's last three seasons, he made the NHSTAA All-America all-tournament team.
Spindler, from Mira Loma High in Sacramento, Calif., was a sectional champion in 2006 and finished highly at other tournaments thereafter, including the 2007 Easter Bowl, a USTA event, and the 2007 International Spring Championships. The accolades earned Spindler a top-six ranking nationally in his age group and top-three in Northern California in 2007. In 2008, Spindler was ranked in the top 100 in his age group.
The 2009 Tigers improved from the previous year, picking up two more victories in both the Ivy League and the overall schedule. Princeton will aim to replace a class of four seniors including two, Peter Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic, who held down the top two spots on the singles ladder during the dual meet season.
