Brett Westgarth Signs With NY Islanders

Princeton men's hockey alum Brett Westgarth '07 recently signed a one-year two-way contract with the New York Islanders for the upcoming 2009-10 season. Westgarth will be one of several Tiger alums playing professional hockey when the season kicks off this fall.
Westgarth played the 2008-09 season for the Worcester Sharks in the American Hockey League, where he was teammate and defensive partner with Mike Moore '08. In Worcester, he scored nine points (2 goals and 7 assists) while totaling 137 penalty minutes. Westgarth split the 2007-08 season between Iowa of the American Hockey League and Flint of the International Hockey League. In 37 games with Iowa, he posted five points on two goals and three assists with 89 penalty minutes. In 27 games with Flint, Westgarth posted 12 points with two goals and 10 assists for 12 points.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Amherstburg, Ontario graduated from Princeton in 2007. In his four years on the Tiger blueline, he registered 24 points in 114 games. Undrafted, he signed as a free agent with Syracuse (AHL) following the conclusion of his senior season.
Westgarth will likely be assigned to the Islanders' AHL affiliate in Bridgeport, Conn.
