Lightweights Edge Neurus, Will Row For Princeton's Ninth Henley Title
July 04, 2009 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Eastern, Ivy League and IRA national champion Tiger men's lightweight crew will row for the ninth Henley Royal Regatta title in Princeton history Sunday after winning its closest race of the week Saturday morning. Princeton defeated A.S.R. Neurus of the Netherlands by 3/4 of a length to advance to its first Henley final since 2003; the Tigers will now face the Brown freshman heavyweight crew, which also won an Eastern title in 2009.
After winning its first three races by at least two lengths, Princeton had a real battle against Neurus. The Tigers persevered for the victory to advance to the program's first Temple Cup final since 2003, when, ironically, they faced the Eastern freshman heavyweight champion. That year, the lightweights fell in the final to Princeton's freshman heavyweight eight, which was then coached by Greg Hughes; this year, Hughes is looking to lead Princeton to another Henley title. The last Princeton team to win Henley was the 2006 heavyweights, which consisted of several rowers from the 2003 freshman championship boat.
Princeton will take on Brown Sunday on the Thames River. Following a victory at the EARC championships, Brown placed third in the IRA grand final. Brown, which has won two races this week by less than a length, defeated Melbourne University by 2 1/4 lengths Saturday.
