PRINCETON, N.J. (9/3/09) - The Princeton men's soccer team kicks off the 2009 season on Friday, Sept. 4 at Lehigh at 7 p.m.
Princeton holds a substantial 31-7-1 record over Lehigh in the all-time series that dates back to 1922. Last season was the first meeting between the squads in five years, and the Mountain Hawks earned a 2-1 decision.
The Tigers return eight starters from last year's team, including the team's midfield anchor, senior Devin Muntz. A Lowe's Senior CLASS nominee, Muntz collected seven points last season and scored one goal in Princeton's 2-2 tie with Towson in a preseason scrimmage. Junior Brandon Busch is the team's top returning scorer after chipping in six goals and three assists in 2008. Adding more scoring depth will be sophomore Antoine Hoppenot who had eight points last season, not including his goal at Towson where he worked his way past four defenders on the way to the goal. Junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch saw action in six games last season and made five starts. He finished the year with a 1.67 goals against average and a .640 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks played their first game on Tuesday, Sept. 1, a 2-1 win over Stanford. The squad received second half goals from senior Jesse Schram and junior Matt Thaeder after trailing 1-0 at halftime. Junior Jonathan Nydell played all 90 minutes in goal and made two stops. He became Lehigh's starting keeper in the middle of last season and finished the year with a 1.23 goals against average, stopping 75% of the shots faced.
