September 08, 2009 | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (9/7/09) - Junior Josh Walburn scored the game-winning goal, one of his two goals on the night, to give the Princeton men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Seton Hall on Monday, Sept. 7 at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Steven Rose got the Pirates on the scoreboard first, sending a header into the net at 10:14, off a set piece from Brayan Martinez from endline on the right side of the goal.
Sophomore Antoine Hoppenot knotted the game with his first goal of the season just over two minutes later, at 12:39. Senior Devin Muntz sent a pass down the middle and Hoppenot beat a defender before sending the ball passed goalkeeper Paul McHenry.
Walburn gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at 23:25. He got control of a loose ball in the center of the field and turned to fire a shot from 20 yards out into the netting.
Seton Hall was awarded a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, and Rose converted the opportunity to make it 2-2.
Walburn again had an immediate answer when he scored the go-ahead goal less than two minutes later. He lofted a direct free kick towards the goal, and the ball ricocheted off a defender and into the upper right corner of the goal.
The Tigers limited the Pirates to just one shot on goal in the second half, and goalkeeper Sean Lynch easily made the save.
Junior Sean Lynch finished the game with one save, the Pirates only shot on goal of the second half. McHenry made four stops and a defender was credited with a team save. Overall, Seton Hall outshot Princeton, 16-11, but could manage just three shots on goal to Princeton's eight.
Princeton is now 2-0 on the season. The last time Princeton began the season with two straight wins was in 2001. Coincidentally that is the last time that the Tigers made the NCAA Tournament.
Princeton will travel to American on Friday, Sept. 11 for a 3 p.m., game.
