WASHINGTON, D.C. (9/11/09) - The Princeton men's soccer team got goals from three different players in the second half to upend American, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 11 at Reeves Field.
Both teams entered the contest with undefeated records, with the Eagles receiving votes in three national polls and sitting at No. 23 in the Soccer America national poll.
Junior Josh Walburn, freshman Matt Sanner and sophomore Antoine Hoppenot each scored for the Tigers who pick up their third consecutive win to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Walburn collected his fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute when he converted a penalty kick after a foul was called inside the goal box. Sanner made it 2-0 with his first career goal as he knocked in a rebound from close range at 58:07. Hoppenot sealed the victory at 84:16 when he blasted a shot from the right side after controlling a loose ball.
American's best opportunity of the game came at the end of the first half. Jack Scott fired a shot across the front of the net and into traffic, but a Princeton defender was able to divert the ball wide of the goal post.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch picks up his third win of the season and second shutout, making four saves.
American's Matt Makowski collected two of the five shots he faced as the Eagles fall to 2-1.
Princeton led American in shots, 17-13 and in corner kicks, 7-5.
The Tigers will make their home debut a week from today, on Friday, Sept. 18 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson on day one of the Princeton Invitational at Roberts Stadium.
