September 19, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/18/09) - Junior Teddy Schneider scored on a penalty kick with 0.8 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Princeton men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the Tigers' home opener at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18.
Sophomore Antoine Hoppenot was taken down inside the 18-yard box on his way to the goal and Princeton was awarded the penalty kick. Schneider stepped for the Tigers and took the kick sending it to the left of the goalkeeper and ripped his jersey off in celebration as the bench cleared into a dog pile.
FDU tied the game with 25 seconds remaining in the second half to force the overtime, after Princeton held the lead for much of the second half.
The scoreless first half was an even game, with shots settling into Princeton's favor 7-6. The Tigers had the better of the chances on goal with freshman Matt Linnville almost putting away a corner by Ben Harms nine minutes into the game. The Knights followed up four minutes later when Leslie Ayafor got the ball at the end line but his shot went directly into the chest of Princeton goalkeeper Sean Lynch. Senior Devin Muntz had back-to-back opportunities and an FDU player hit the cross bar to conclude the first half.
Thirty-nine seconds into the second half junior Josh Walburn gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead, scoring his fifth goal of the season.
Harms nearly made it 2-0 when his shot in the 56th minute skimmed the cross bar while Ayafor lofted a shot that hit the cross bar in the 73rd minute. The Tigers had consecutive shots just clear the net in the next few minutes and Lynch came up with a big save on a Sergio Munoz shot with just under two minutes to play.
Playing man up, after an FDU player received a red card in the 59th minute, sophomore Colby Hahn and freshman Matt Sanner went 2x1 with the goalie but Sanner's kick was just a step off as the ball nicked the left post with 1:16 to play in regulation. With time winding down, FDU moved all but one of its nine field players up to attack the goal and Dominic Reinold delivered. Ayafor had the ball at the top corner of the goal box and sent the ball towards the goal where Reinold, laying on the ground, used a back kick to put the ball into the net with just 25 seconds on the clock.
Princeton had the better of the chances in the overtime sessions, recording two shots and two corner kicks in the first OT while FDU had zero. In the second OT, Princeton had two more corner kicks and put the ball in front of the net but a cross was quickly swept up by Zaineh with 30 seconds to play.
Princeton finished the game with an 18-13 advantage in shots, while shots on goal were even 5-5. FDU had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks and in fouls, 19-4. The Knights received five cards to the Tigers' one.
The Tigers remain undefeated with a 4-0 record and will face Monmouth on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2:30 p.m., to decide the winner of the Princeton Invitational, after Monmouth knocked off Cornell, 4-1 in the earlier game to improve to 6-0 on the season. FDU (2-3) will take on Cornell at noon.
