Men's Soccer Falls to Monmouth 1-0 in Princeton Invitational Finale
September 20, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/20/09) - A goal by Drew Von Bargen in the 5th minute was all No. 19-ranked Monmouth needed to secure a 1-0 win over Princeton in men's soccer on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in the final game of the Princeton Invitational.
A Princeton corner kick didn't go as planned as Ryan Kinne got the ball in the midfield and sprinted down the field. He delivered a great cross to Von Bargen who had a clean shot at the net with no defenders in sight, going to the left of junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch.
The Hawks had two more shots on goal in the ninth minute, and junior defender Tim Sedwitz made a team save on a Chase Barbieri shot, as two forwards clamored for a loose ball in front of the near post.
Princeton followed up with a couple close chances of its own, the first by freshman defender Mark Linnville who had a shot off a corner kick picked up by goalkeeper Bryan Meredith, and an Antoine Hoppenot flick went just wide.
Minutes later Hoppenot had a breakaway, but as he tried to make a move around the goalie, the defense caught up and was able to kick the ball out for a corner kick. Hoppenot had another chance with 20 minutes to play in the half, but his shot knocked off a defender's cleat.
Both teams continued to apply strong pressure for the remainder of the first half. With 30 seconds to play, Monmouth's Ryan Clark sent a shot in on net but Lynch was there to make a big save to end the half.
Neither team had many quality scoring chances in the second half, but Princeton began to step up its offense in the final 15 minutes of the contest, sensing the weight of the ticking clock. Linnville had a header off a Ben Harm's corner kick saved, just after a Lester Nare shot went wide from a Harm's pass. A minute later another Linnville header cleared the net. Harms had Princeton's final shot on goal when he wheeled two defenders inside the 18-yard box.
Lynch finished the game with five saves, while Meredith picked up four shots.
Princeton had a slight edge in shots, 18-15 and took nine corners to Monmouth's four.
The loss marked Princeton's first loss of the season, as the team falls to 4-1. Monmouth improves to 6-0 and earns the title of winner of the Princeton Invitational.
Following the game, the all-tournament team was selected. Princeton's Teddy Schneider, Linnville and Lynch were selected to the squad. Schneider scored the game-winning goal over Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday.
The Tigers head to California next weekend to take part in the Nike Aztec Soccer Classic at San Diego State.
