January 19, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Princeton freshman Jonathan Yergler beat out 192 competitors to win the junior men's epee competition at the North American Cup in San Jose, Calif., over the weekend, one of several outstanding performances by Tiger fencers.
Fellow rookie Edward Kelley finished 24th in the same junior men's epee field. In the overall Division I men's epee competition, junior Graham Wicas finished fifth of 261 entrants, with Kelley 10th and Yergler 49th.
On the women's side, freshman Hannah Safford placed second of 115 competitors in the junior women's epee while sophomore Susannah Scanlan placed 12th. In the Division I field of 142 competitors, Scanlan placed 18th and Safford 21st. Lindsay Campbell, a 2002 alumna, was the Division I champion in the epee.
The events allow competitors to earn points toward competing in international events, and the Division I name bears no relation to NCAA Division I. The next junior event will be the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn., Feb. 12-15, while the next Division I event will be in Virginia Beach, Va., in April.
