Four Players Reach Double Digits as Women's Hoops Defeats Fordham

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/2/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team had four players in double digits in scoring and gutted out a 75-61 win over Fordham on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Jadwin Gym. After the Tigers grabbed their largest lead of the game, a 32-point differential, the Rams rallied scoring 31 points in the last 12 minutes.
Junior Addie Micir scored a team-high 20 points and tied her personal mark of six three-pointers in the game, hitting six of her nine attempts from behind the arc. She also added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Freshman Niveen Rasheed scored 17 points and sophomore Lauren Edwards had 16 points, all of which came in the first half. Junior Krystal Hill added a season-best 12 points, while freshman Lauren Polanksy set a career record with six assists.
"Our hope is that our non-league games prepare us for the league, and I think Fordham was a good preparation in that they were so different than most of the teams we play," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "I was pleased with Addie's leadership, giving us poise and confidence throughout the second half. It's nice to start the 2010 year off with a win."
Princeton started the game taking a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before an NBA three-pointer by Micir and a layup by Edwards made it a 10-point game, 17-7 at 14:04.
Hill entered the game at 10:03 and scored eight of the team's next 10 points to expand Princeton's lead to 14, 29-15. Edwards scored the next five points of the game to make it 34-15, and following a basket by Fordham's Kristina Bell, freshman Kate Miller put Princeton up by 19, 36-17 with less than five minutes in the half.
The Rams went on a 7-0 run to get within 12 before an Edwards jumper ended the run at 1:23. In the final minute, Micir drained a three and added a 'j' to end the half 43-24 in favor of the Tigers.
Edwards scored all 16 of her points in the first half on 7 for 10 shooting, while Micir had 11, going 4 for 8 and sinking 3 of 5 from behind the arc.
The Tigers started the second half on a 10-3 streak with Rasheed scoring eight of the team's 10 points, and picking up an assist on the other basket scored by Devona Allgood, to make it a 24-point game, 53-29 at 14:01.
Two minutes later Princeton had its largest lead of the game, a 32-point differential, 62-30 before the Rams rallied scoring 31 points to the Tigers' 13.
The Rams went on a 14-0 run to make it 62-44, holding the Tigers scoreless for 4:11, and limited the squad to just one shooting attempt.
Rasheed ended the drought for Princeton at 7:57 but Fordham wasn't done yet. The Rams added another five points to make it 64-49 at 5:19, the closest the team had gotten since the first half.
A three-ball by Micir and three points from Rasheed gave Princeton a 20-point lead at 3:28 before the Rams closed out the game on a 11-5 run to end the game 75-61.
Randall Hurst who scored a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals led Fordham. Bell finished the night with 13 points, seven boards and four assists. Tiffany Stokes added seven points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Rams shot 37.3 percent overall, and were 30.8 percent from long range and 76 percent from the line.
Princeton shot 54.5 percent in the game, averaging over 50 percent in each half. The team was 53.8 percent from the charity stripe and 61.5 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton improves to 11-2, its best start in program history, and will travel to play La Salle on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
