October 02, 2010 | Sprint Football
PRINCETON (10/1/10) - The Princeton sprint football team had its best defensive game since 2005, but fell to Mansfield 10-6 on Friday night on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter and Mansfield added a field goal in the second quarter. Mansfield took a 7-0 lead on the second play of its first drive of the game when Michael Wallace broke through the Princeton defensive line and ran 57 yards for a touchdown.
The Mounties held the 7-0 lead until Princeton's third drive of the game when the Tigers went 37 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown. John Moffat ran the ball in from two yards out to bring Princeton within a point, but his running attempt for a two-point conversion was stopped.
Mansfield held the one-point lead and extended it to four with 3:37 left in the second quarter. The Mounties got the ball on the Princeton 27 following an interception by Jon Keller. Mansfield moved the ball and had a first-and-goal on the three-yard line, but Princeton stopped the Mounties three times. Mansfield was going to go for it on fourth down, but settled for a field goal after a false start penalty moved the ball to the six-yard line.
The teams traded possessions in the third and fourth quarters with neither threatening offensively. Mansfield drove to the Princeton 15 early in the third, but turned the ball over on downs and Princeton got to the Mansfield 36 early in the fourth before two incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs.
Princeton's final chance to get a winning score came with 2:22 remaining in the fourth with a drive starting on their own 18-yard line. The Tigers got a second-down reception for 20-yards, but the play came back because of a holding penalty and the Tigers were unable to overcome it.
Mansfield's Michael Wallace carried the ball 19 times for 129 yards while Princeton's leading rusher Kevin Infante had 28 carries for 62 yards. Both quarterbacks, Jaison Zacahriah of Princeton and Spencer LaMountain of Mansfield completed 10 passes.
