PRINCETON (10/7/10) - The Princeton men's soccer team will face a true test when it hosts undefeated and No. 13-ranked Brown on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. It marks the final game of Princeton's five-game homestand in which the Tigers have gone 4-0.
The game will be webstreamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.tv for subscribers and live stats will be available free of charge.
Saturday will feature a Princeton/Brown doubleheader as the women's teams will square off in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
Brown holds a 33-19-6 record over Princeton in the all-time series that began in 1948. The Bears have won the last four meetings, including a 4-2 game in Providence last season. Princeton's last win in the series came in 2004.
The last time out, Sean Rosa put Brown on the board less than two minutes into the game. The Bears added two more goals within 21 seconds in the 51st minute. Matt Sanner scored for Princeton in the 57th minute before Jay Hayward made it 4-1 Brown. Brandon Busch scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Sean Lynch finished the game with one save for Princeton while Paul Grandstrand made five saves for Bruno. The Bears entered the game allowing just 9.7 shots per game, but Princeton took 16 and put seven on net. Brown had 19 shots, five of which were on target.
Princeton is 5-3-1 on the season and is on a four-game winning streak winning all four during a five-game homestand. In the last four games Princeton has scored 12 goals and has held opponents to just three goals.
Junior Antoine Hoppenot and senior Josh Walburn are both in double digits in points. Hoppenot has scored six goals and added three assists for 15 points. Walburn has tallied four goals and four assists each for 12 points. Junior Manny Sardinha has seven points off of three goals and one helper. Sophomores Matt Sanner and Lester Nare have four points apiece. Five other Tigers have a point or more. Senior goalkeeper Sean Lynch has collected three shutouts this season and has allowed 11 goals on 53 shots. He owns a 1.18 goals against average and a .792 save percentage.
Brown is ranked in all four national polls, receiving its top billing in the NSCAA coaches poll at the No. 13 spot. The Bears lead the country in goals against average, save percentage and shutout percentage due to their unstoppable force in goal Paul Grandstrand. Grandstrand is the nation's leader in goals against average at 0.11 and save percentage at .964.
The team is 7-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League with a 3-0 shutout of Columbia. Brown has allowed just one goal all season and limits team's to 11.1 shots per game, while averaging 14.8 shots per game themselves and scoring 1.78 goals per game. Junior Sean Rosa is the team's leading scorer with 11 points earnd off of four goals and three assists. Senior Jon Okafor has three goals and three assists for nine points. Juniors T.J. Popolizio and Austin Mandel each have six points, with Mandel being the team's assist leading with four helpers. Seven other Bears have a point or more.
Brown has made the NCAA Tournament five times in the last seven years and 24 times in program history.
