PRINCETON (11/9/10) - The Princeton men's soccer team looks to secure sole possession of the Ivy League crown when it faces Yale in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m., at Reese Stadium.
Live stats will be available free of charge for the game, however it will not be webstreamed.Yale holds a 42-35-22 lead in the all-time series that began in 1910. Princeton won the meeting last season a 4-0 game featured as the Fox Soccer Channel Game of the Week. The Bulldogs are 3-1-1 in the last five meetings. Antoine Hoppenot recorded a hat trick in the win with Tim Sedwitz tallying the final goal in the 88th minute. Sean Lynch made two saves and Josh Walburn was credited with a team save. Yale keeper Travis Chulick finished with five saves.
Princeton is 12-3-1 and 6-0 in the Ivy League after securing the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Penn last Saturday. The Tigers have won the last 11 consecutive games. Junior striker Antoine Hoppenot is the team and league's leading scorer with eight goals and five assists for 21 points. Senior Josh Walburn has a team and league-best seven helpers and six assists for 19 points. Sophomore Matt Sanner is also in double figures with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Junior Manny Sardinha, sophomore Lester Nare and senior Benjamin Burton have nine points apiece. Senior captain Sean Lynch has started all 16 games in goal and has five shutouts. He has allowed just 16 goals and has made 62 stops for a 1.00 goals against average and a .795 save percentage.
Yale is 3-11-2 on the season and is 1-4-1 in the league to sit in seventh place in the standings. The Elis most recently dropped a 4-1 game at Brown. The team's last win was a 1-0 game against Lehigh. Other wins include a 1-0 game against Cornell and a 2-1 overtime win over Sacred Heart. The squad has had a challenging schedule this season with a season opener at UConn, as well as non-conference games against South Carolina and St. John's. Senior captain Andy Shorten is the team's leading scorer with three goals for six points. Freshman forward Peter Jacobson and junior Andy Hackbarth have each scored twice and rookie Cody Wilkins has three points. Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Thaiman has started in all but one game this season and has made 62 saves on 84 shots for a 1.42 goals against average and a .738 save percentage. Yale averaged 0.56 goals per game and 9.4 shots per game, while allowing opponents 14.8 shots and 1.50 goals per game. The Bulldogs have scored just nine times this season and has been shutout eight times.
The two teams have played two common opponents, FDU and Lehigh. Princeton defeated FDU 1-0 in the season opener while Yale lost 1-0 to the Knights. Princeton fell 3-2 to Lehigh in the next game while Yale defeated the Mountain Hawks 1-0.
