Fencers to Open Season at Penn State Tournament
November 11, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- In its return to the fencing strip for the first time since taking its best NCAA championship place since 2003 last March, the Princeton fencing teams will compete in their annual first event, the Penn State Garret Open, Saturday and Sunday.
Competition for the women will take place Saturday with the men to follow Sunday. Both days will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The field will be a strong one for the individually scored event, with fencers from seven of the top 10 finishing teams from the 2010 NCAA championship in attendance. Host Penn State is the defending national champion, while Notre Dame took third, Ohio State fourth, Harvard fifth, Princeton sixth, Penn eighth and Duke 10th.
Princeton's top-finishing returners from last year's event are both sophomores. Epeeist Jonathan Yergler took second at the 2009 Garret Open, while sabreist Joanna Cichomski placed fourth. The 2010 event will be Princeton's eighth straight visit to the Garret Open since first competing there in 2003.
Both Tiger teams were Ivy League champions last season, the first league titles for each program since 2001. The dual-meet season will get underway Dec. 5 with bouts at Sacred Heart.
