Leung, Cabral Lead Princeton To Men's XC Regional Title
November 13, 2010 | Men's Cross Country
Brian Leung didn't finish the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional race a year ago. He and his Princeton teammates finished on top this time around.
One year after an injury forced Leung not to finish the regional race, the junior ran the 10K course in 30:11 to finish fourth overall and lead Princeton to a dramatic win over fellow national powers Villanova and Georgetown.
The regional title advances the Princeton team to the NCAA championship meet, which will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday Nov. 22.
Leung ran the same time as teammate Donn Cabral, who finished fifth. Cabral was the Ivy League Heptagonal champion two weeks ago, when Princeton ran away from the field to win the team title as well.
Mark Amirault finished in ninth at the regional, and when Joe Stilin finished 16th and Max Kaulbach came in 19th, Princeton had itself 53 points and a first-place team standing. Villanova went 7-10-12-15-17 to finish second with 61 points.
Georgetown finished in third, followed by Penn State and Navy.
It was a far cry from the rain and mud of a year ago at Maryland-Eastern Shore, when Princeton's men finished sixth overall.
This time, the entire team will be heading to Indiana. The Tigers were ranked 17th in the most recent national poll.
All five of Princeton's scorers: Leung, Cabral, Amirault, Stilin and Kaulbach earned All-Region honors in addition to Arroyo Yamin based on their individual top-25 finishes.
