Hoppenot Named Ivy League Player of the Year in Men's Soccer
November 16, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/16/10) - Junior forward Antoine Hoppenot has been named the Ivy League Men's Soccer Player of the Year, it was announced by the league office in its annual All-Ivy League press release.
The honor comes just two days after the Tigers clinched the first 7-0-0 Ivy League season in program history and first Ivy League title since 2001. Princeton will host Maryland-Baltimore County in the NCAA tournament Thursday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium with the winner advancing to face William & Mary, the No. 12 national seed, Sunday in the round of 32.
Princeton led the league in all-league honors with eight. Senior Josh Walburn, sophomore Mark Linnville and Hoppenot were named first-team All-Ivy. Senior Benjamin Burton, senior Teddy Schneider, sophomore Lester Nare and sophomore Matt Sanner were named second-team All-Ivy, while senior goalkeeper Sean Lynch earned honorable mention.
Hoppenot is the fourth player in program history to earn Player of the Year honors. He joins his head coach Jim Barlow (1990), Mike Nugent (2001) and Darren Spicer (2004) as Tigers earning the prestigious honor.
Hoppenot, Walburn and Linville were all first-team selections in 2009, a season which also earned an NCAA tournament bid. It is the third All-Ivy honor in as many years for Hoppenot, who was a second-teamer in 2008.
Burton's honor is his third straight second-team All-Ivy appearance, while Lynch and Sanner were All-Ivy players for the first time in 2009 as honorable mentions.
Hoppenot was the Ivy League's points leader with eight goals and five assists for 21 points, while Walburn was right behind with 19 points. Hoppenot's eight goals were tied for a league-best total, while Walburn tied for second with six. Walburn tied for the league lead in assists with seven and co-led the league with four game-winning goals.
Lynch ranked third among Ivy League goalkeepers in save percentage, at .790, and fourth in goals-against average at an even goal per game while posting five shutouts.
Sanner, Burton and Nare all had at least three goals this season, with Sanner's five goals standing third on the team behind Hoppenot and Walburn and Burton right behind with four. Schneider was second on the team with five assists. Linville also contributed a goal on two assists while helping the team to six shutouts on the defensive end.
