Women's Squash Caps Perfect Weekend With 7-2 Win Over Cornell
November 21, 2010 | Women's Squash
Princeton was pushed hard in its third match of the weekend, but the Tiger women's squash team moved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League with a 7-2 victory over Cornell Sunday at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
Princeton took control in the opening shift, winning each of the even matches by 3-0 scored. The Tigers players had to fight through tight games in each, including a handful of 11-9 wins. Senior co-captains Jackie Moss (2) and Nikki Sequeira (6) were part of the winning opening shift, while freshman Lexi Saunders earned a hard-fought win at 4. Sophomore Casey Cortes was Princeton's fourth winner, which allowed the second shift to play with far less pressure.
Cornell provided a strong challenge in the second half of the match and took at least one game in all five matches. It got its first win at the No. 7 spot, where Maggie Remsen defeated Caroline Feeley, but Princeton had plenty in reserve to take the match.
Both sophomore Julie Cerullo (1) and junior Daphne Rein-Weston (9) split their opening games, but both swept their third and fourth games for 3-1 wins. Cerullo stayed unbeaten at the top spot with an 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3 win over Jaime Laird. At No. 3, junior Katie Giovinazzo fell into a 2-0 hole before fighting back to win the third. She went into extra points before falling to Jennifer Gemmell 13-11 in the fourth game.
Freshman Alex Sawin closed the match with the only five-set match of the day. After the third consecutive 11-8 game evened the match at two games apiece, Sawin took total control of the fifth and won 11-1.
Princeton is now off for Thanksgiving week and will return to the court in two weekends for a trio of matches in New England. The Tigers will try for 3-0 in the Ivy League Dec. 4 at Brown and will wrap up the 2010 portion of their schedule the next day with matches against Williams and Middlebury.
