PRINCETON (11/3/10) - The Princeton men's soccer team will play for the Ivy League title on Saturday, Nov. 6 when it hosts Penn at 7 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Admission to the game is free. Fans who can't make it to the game can watch the live web stream and follow live stats free of charge.
Penn and Princeton are the only teams who have a chance to win the Ivy crown with matching 5-0 league records. The winner of Saturday's game will claim a share of the Ivy title and secure the league's automatic NCAA bid. The difference comes if the game ends in a tie; in that case, both teams will be 5-0-1 in league play, and nothing will be settled until next Saturday's final games. (Penn hosts Harvard; Princeton travels to Yale).
This is the first time that Penn and Princeton will be playing for the Ivy League title since the league began the tournament in 1955.
Princeton has won six Ivy League titles (1957, 60, 88, 93, 99, 01) and has made eight NCAA Tournament appearances (1977, 79, 89, 93, 95, 99, 01, 09) including an invitation last season. Penn has won seven Ivy League titles (1955, 61, 71, 72, 80, 02, 08) and has made eight NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2008.
The match-up will feature the top four goal scorers in the Ivy League. Penn's Stephen Baker has scored eight goals, while Antoine Hoppenot has seven, Josh Walburn has six and Matt Sanner has five. The top-two assist leaders, Walburn and Christian Barriero will also go head-to-head, as they have six apiece. In goal, Princeton's Sean Lynch leads the league in saves and saves per game, while Penn's Ben Berg ranks second in the league in goals against average and save percentage.
Princeton is 11-3-1 overall and has won its last 10 games after starting the season 1-3-1. The Tigers are ranked No. 16 in the national poll. Junior Antoine Hoppenot is at the top of the scoring column with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Senior Josh Walburn has a team-high six assists to go along with six goals for 18 points. Sophomore Matt Sanner has been a tear lately, picking up nine of his 13 points in the last three games. Junior Manny Sardinha, sophomore Lester Nare and senior Brandon Busch each have eight points. Senior captain Sean Lynch has started all 15 games and has five shutouts to his credit. He has made 60 saves and allowed 15 goals for a 1.00 goals against average and an .800 save percentage.
Penn is 12-3 overall, is unbeaten on the road with a 5-0 away record and is ranked No. 13 in the national poll. This won't be Penn's first trip to Roberts Stadium this season, as the Quakers competed in the 2010 Princeton Invitational in September.
Freshman Stephen Baker leads the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. Christian Barreiro has a team-leading six assists to go along with three goals for 12 points, while Travis Cantrell has 11 points on four goals and three assists. Thomas Brandt and Loukas Tasigianis each have eight points. Ben Berg has been the only keeper the Quakers have utilized this season. He has made 55 saves and allowed just eight goals for a 0.52 goals against average and an .873 save percentage. He has eight shutouts to his credit.
Penn averages 1.60 goals and 13.2 shots per game, while holding teams to 0.53 goals and 10.9 shots per game. The Quakers are undefeated on the road at 5-0.
Penn holds a slight 47-41-10 lead in the all-time series that began in 1915. Princeton however is unbeaten in the last three meetings including a 3-1 victory last season at Rhodes Field. That game marked head coach Jim Barlow's 100th career victory. Penn's last win in the series was in 2006.
Last year in Philadelphia, three different Tigers scored in the 3-1, on Saturday contest. Antoine Hoppenot knocked in a Josh Walburn rebound in the 23rd minute and Ben Harms made it 2-0 in the 39th minute when he beat two defenders and put away a 25-yard shot. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Penn cut the deficit to 2-1, when Jason Gorski scored on a Christian Barreiro corner kick. Matt Sanner added Princeton's third goal of the game in the 63rd minute when he chipped keeper Garon Smith from 18 yards out. Both teams had 14 shots apiece and both keepers Sean Lynch and Smith finished with five saves apiece.
Princeton and Penn have common opponents in: Lafayette, Villanova, Georgetown, Adelphi, Richmond and American. Penn is 4-2 against those teams while Princeton is 3-2-1. Both teams have defeated Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth and Brown. The Quakers won all four games by 1-0 scores, while Princeton scored 10 goals and allowed just two, both from Columbia.
