Women's Golf Wins Hawaii Tournament
November 05, 2010 | Women's Golf
KAHUKU, Hawaii -- Princeton's women's golf team led at the end of all three rounds of play at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Hawaii, claiming the tournament title.
The win is Princeton's first tournament victory in more than 18 months since the Columbia-hosted Roar-EE Invitational on April 18, 2009. It is also the first win for rookie head coach Nicki Cutler.
Princeton's final margin was three shots, finishing at 33-over while Portland State took second at 36-over. BYU, UC Irvine, Southern Illinois, Hawaii, and the University of British Columbia completed the field.
Freshman Kelly Shon, who led through the first two rounds, was overtaken by three players including tournament champion Tiffany Schoning of Portland State at 2-over for the tournament. Schoning posted a 69 in the final round, matching Shon's first-round score for the tournament's low round. Ronnie Valerio of UC Irvine was second at 4-over, and Kalyn Dodge of Portland State was third at 6-over, one shot ahead of Shon.
The tournament capped Princeton's fall schedule. The Tigers played their four tournaments in three time zones, competing in Missouri as well as Massachusetts, Hawaii and the annual Princeton Invitational.
