December 30, 2010 | Men's Ice Hockey
STORRS, Conn. (12/30/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team earned its first in-season tournament championship since the 1998-99 season with a 4-1 win over Connecticut in the championship game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic on Thursday night at the Freitas Ice Forum.
It was Princeton's first tournament championship win since the Tigers claimed the Mariucci Classic in Minnesota back in December of 1998.
Princeton jumped out to an early lead and despite a spirited first period by the Huskies held a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Princeton scored on its first shot of the game at 4:18 of the first period when Taylor Fedun scored his fourth goal of the season. Fedun was the trailer on a 3 on 2 and received a feed from Rob Kleebaum to put the Tigers ahead. Eric Meland also assisted on the play as Princeton led 1-0.
The rest of the first period belonged to Connecticut as the Huskies fired 14 shots on Princeton netminder Sean Bonar but couldn't solve him. The 14 included a breakaway chance by Andrew Olson that could have evened the game late in the period. UConn outshot Princeton 14-5 in the opening stanza.
Princeton awoke to start the second and quickly went ahead 2-0 on Jeremy Goodwin's first collegiate goal at 1:42. Matt Farris carried the puck into the zone and sent a centering pass to the slot that Goodwin shot under UConn goaltender Garrett Bartus as Goodwin drove to the net. Kevin Ross also had an assist on the tally.
UConn quickly answered to get back within a goal as Marcello Ranallo scored a backdoor goal on Bonar. Billy Lata made the play behind the net as he quickly switched directions and fed Ranallo on the vacant post. Those were the only two goals of the period but their were chances at both ends of the ice as Princeton outshot UConn 24-7 in the second.
Princeton mainetained the 2-1 edge through much of the third period before the Tigers added two late insurance goals. Eric Carlson redirected a Cam Ritchie shot that was also assisted by Will MacDonald. The goal was Carlson's first collegiate goal.
Kevin Lohry completed the scoring with an empty-net goal to seal the win in the final minute for his third goal of the tournament. It was assisted by Matt Arhontas and Andrew Calof.
Bonar finished the game with 24 saves to improve to 5-1 this season. Bartus finished with 39 saves for UConn. Princeton outshot Connecticut 43-25 in the win, despite having only five shots in the opening period.
Following the game, three members of the Tigers were named to the All-Tournament Team. Fedun was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with Lohry and Andrew Ammon.
Princeton improved to 10-5-0 overall with the win. Princeton returns to ECAC Hockey play on Monday night against Quinnipiac at Hobey Baker Rink.
