Men's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie With Quinnipiac
January 03, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (1/3/11) - The Princeton men's hockey team traded second period goals with Quinnipiac in a 1-1 tie on Monday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Derrick Pallis scored for Princeton in the draw.
Princeton was flying in the early going and fired the game's first six shots on goal before the Bobcats got going. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 10-5 in the opening period but both goaltenders, Eric Hartzell of Quinnipiac and Mike Condon of Princeton, stopped all the shots they faced.
Quinnipiac broke through first in a second period that saw a combined 30 shots on goal. The go-ahead goal came at 7:09 from Jeremy Langlois after Johns Dunbar set him up with a wide-open net on a 3 on 1. Ben Arnt also assisted on the goal as the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead.
Princeton's Mike Kramer had two great chances to knot the game on back-door plays but both times was denied by Hartzell as he came across. Princeton however would eventually get the equalizer at 15:40 thanks to a fortuitous bounce. Pallis stopped a clearing attempt at the blue line and threw the puck towards the net. The puck changed directions on its way to the net when it hit the stick of Dunbar and ricocheted into the open net for Pallis' fourth goal of the year.
Princeton had a chance to go ahead in the final seconds of the period as Andrew Ammon went in on Hartzell on a breakaway but Hartzell got a piece of the shot and the puck bounced over the net as the horn sounded to end the second period.
Play slowed down in the third period with the teams accounting for 15 shots on goal in the period, half of the previous period's total. Neither team was able to score and the game went to overtime. Princeton had the only shot of overtime and Ammon had another breakaway chance that he ended up shooting over the net.
Hartzell made 34 saves in the tie, while Condon stopped 25 of the 26 he faced. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 35-36.
The tie was Princeton's first of the season and moved the Tigers to 10-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in ECAC Hockey. Quinnipiac is now 10-9-2 overall and 4-5-2 in league play. Princeton is back in action on Friday night against Cornell at Hobey Baker Rink.
