Men's Hockey Edged by Cornell 2-1
January 07, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (1/7/11) - Cornell snapped the 19th-ranked Princeton men's hockey teams six-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Big Red were opportunistic in the win, scoring on two of 21 shots as Princeton nearly doubled the visitors in shots by a 40-21 margin. Cornell netminder Mike Garman stopped 39 of the 40 shots he faced for the win.
Cornell took a 1-0 lead midway through the second period on a power-play goal. Matt Arhontas was assessed a tripping penalty in the neutral zone and on the ensuing offensive zone face-off, Cornell won the draw back to point man Matthieu Brisson who fired a shot that Sean Collins deflected on the doorstep and past Princeton netminder Sean Bonar.
The Big Red withstood Princeton's offense through the rest of the second period and carried the lead into the closing mintues before Princeton drew even at 18:12. Andrew Calof took the puck behind his own net and skated the length of the ice before sending a centering pass into the slot. His pass bounced off a Cornell defender's skate and bounced over Garman to knot the game at 1-1.
Princeton looked to be back in the game but Cornell answered back immediately, regaining the lead 31 seconds later on a Nick D'Agostino goal. Brisson had a shot blocked and the rebound came right to D'Agostino who put it in the Princeton goal before Bonar could slide across.
Bonar stopped 19 of 21 shots in the loss. Princeton was 0 for 4 on the power play while Cornell scored on one of its two chances.
Princeton falls to 10-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in ECAC Hockey with the loss, while Cornell is now 5-8-2 overal and 3-4-0 in league play. Princeton is back in action on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., when Colgate visits Hobey Baker Rink in a game televised nationally on ESPNU.
