Dual Meet Season Opens Sunday for Fencers

Princeton will open the day of duals at Sacred Heart against the defending champion, Penn State, at 10 a.m. Sunday. The rest of the day will match Princeton with Vassar, No. 23 at the 2010 NCAA championship, at 11, followed by No. 18 finisher Sacred Heart at noon, No. 16 finisher NYU at 1 p.m., and No. 20 finisher North Carolina at 3:30.
The Tigers placed sixth at the national championship last March.
Princeton returns 11 of the maximum 12 qualifiers from last year's NCAA final.
In men's epee, both senior Graham Wicas and sophomore Jonathan Yergler were NCAA national qualifiers and first-team All-Ivy League honorees. Yergler was also an All-America winner as a freshman, placing ninth in the nation.
Alexander Mills and David Mandle, both juniors, were NCAA qualifiers last season, while Mills was a first-team All-Ivy honoree and Mandle was a second-teamer. Mills earned All-America honors in 11th place nationally.
All four Princeton freshmen are saberists, including Philip Dershwitz, Spencer Koo, Stephen Moch and Robert Stone. Senior John Stogin and Thomas Abend '10 were Princeton's NCAA qualifiers, with Abend earning All-America honors in 12th place as well as a spot on the second team All-Ivy.
On the women's side, sophomore Phoebe Caldwell and junior Susannah Scanlan were Princeton's NCAA national qualifiers in the epee, with Scanlan, who will soon be pursuing a berth in the 2012 Olympic Games, earning All-America honors in seventh place. Scanlan was a first-team All-Ivy honoree while Caldwell was a second-teamer.
Sophomore Brianna Martin was Princeton's highest finisher at the NCAA finals last season, earning All-America honors by placing fifth. Martin competed alongside junior Rocky Rothenberg at the NCAAs, while Martin and junior Lucile Jarry were both first-team All-Ivy honorees.
Sophomore Eliza Stone earned a place on the second team All-Ivy and earned All-America honors at the NCAA finals by placing eighth. There, she competed alongside fellow sophomore Joanna Cichomski.
The dual-meet schedule will resume in early February with the Northwestern Duals in Illinois.
