PRINCETON (12/4/10) - Matt Farris scored his first two collegiate goals to help the Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-1 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday evening at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton controlled play from the onset and scored four second period goals build a big lead in the win.
Princeton outshot St. Lawrence 16-5 in the first period but couldn't crack Saint netminder Robby Moss, who was equal to the task on all 16 shots. Princeton continued to fire away at the Saint net in the second period and broke through at the 9:09 mark when Farris found the back of the net.
Following a defensive zone faceoff, the Tigers gained possession as Taylor Fedun carried the puck into the neutral zone. He then banked a pass off the boards up ahead to send Andrew Ammon in on the St. Lawrence goal on a 2 on 1 with Farris. Ammon took a shot, which Moss stopped, but the rebound came right to Farris for the goal.
Princeton continued to pressure following the goal and drew five penalties over the second half of the second period, converting on three to build the 4-0 lead. Eric Meland scored on the power play less than two minutes after Farris' goal putting home the rebound of a Jack Berger shot. For Meland it was his fourth goal of the year and second in as many nights.
The Tigers then added two more power-play goals less than a minute apart in the 18th minute of the period. First Matt Arhontas stuffed in a loose puck in the crease and then Farris put in a rebound of his own shot. Mike Kramer and Fedun assisted on the first goal, while Kevin Ross and Brodie Zuk had the helpers on the second.
The three power-play goals, coupled with three scored on Friday against Clarkson and two in Princeton's previous game against Quinnipiac give the Tigers eight power-play goals in the last three games.
Kyle Flanagan scored 14 seconds into the third period to put St. Lawrence on the board, but Mike Kramer closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal at 14:36. Alec Rush and Arhontas had assists on the empty netter.
Sean Bonar made 18 saves for his third win of the season, while Moss stopped 31 shots in two periods in the loss. Joe Spadaccini made 11 saves in the third period. Princeton outshot St. Lawrence 47-19 in the win.
Princeton improved to 6-5-0 overall and 6-3-0 in ECAC Hockey with the win. Princeton hosts UMass Lowell in a two-game non-league series next weekend.
