Safford Wins Junior World Cup Fencing Event
December 06, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Sophomore epeeist Hannah Safford finished No. 1 of 56 competitors at a Junior World Cup fencing event in Burgos, Spain over the weekend.
Safford was one of a handful of Princeton fencers competing Saturday, Dec. 4 across Europe in Junior World Cup events. In the men's epee competition held in Helsinki, Finland, sophomore Jonathan Yergler placed ninth with classmate Edward Kelley right behind in 10th of 125 as two of the top three American finishers. In Waldkirch, Germany, freshman Eve Levin placed 65th in the women's foil while classmate Hyun-Kyung Yuh placed 84th of 107.
Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, Princeton's fencers still fared well despite missing a few of the top Tigers, with the men's and women's teams combining to take nine of 10 team bouts including a men's win over defending NCAA champion Penn State.
The competitions serve as opportunities to add qualifying points toward representing the U.S. in the Junior World Championship in Mer Morte, Jordan from Mar. 29 through April 6, 2011.
