Eight Fencers Head to Junior Olympics
February 10, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- With the championship season fast approaching, eight Princeton fencers will compete in the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn., Friday through Monday.
Last season, Princeton had two fencers at the 2009 Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, N.M., where junior John Stogin placed seventh of 162 junior saber fencers and Lucile Jarry placed 18th of 136 foilists.
Jarry and seven others are registered to participate this year. Joining Jarry on the women's side are freshman saberists Joanna Cichomski and Eliza Stone and freshman epeeists Hannah Safford and Phoebe Caldwell.
On the men's side, Princeton will have a trio of freshmen, foilist Robert Malcolm and epeeists Edward Kelley and Jonathan Yergler.
Fencers must be under 20 years of age to compete in the event. Friday will see the men's saber competition, while Saturday will see the men's epee and women's saber. Men's foil and women's epee will compete Sunday, while women's foil will compete Monday.
Just days after these Tigers return, Princeton will head to Cornell for the first of two Ivy League weekends on Feb. 21.
