PRINCETON (2/10/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team continues its race to the postseason by opening a four-game stretch away from Baker Rink this weekend in New York's North Country against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Princeton saw its season-long three-game win streak snapped last Friday night by Colgate, but rebounded a day later by defeating fifth-ranked Cornell 5-3 for the team's fourth win in five games since returning from the exam break in late December. Princeton is also 7-3-1 in its last 11 games dating back to a mid-December win at UMass Lowell.
On Friday, Colgate took advantage of its chances, scoring two goals 71 seconds apart eight minutes into the second period to snap a scoreless tie and put the Raiders ahead for good. Mike Kramer would cut the lead in half for the Tigers late in the second period, but Colgate stymied any attempts at a Princeton rally in the third period as the Raiders skated to a 3-1 win.
The Tigers bounced back on Saturday with a quick start that saw Princeton build a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals from Kramer, his 10th of the season and third in as many games, and Will MacDonald, the first of his collegiate career. Cornell trimmed the lead to a goal early in the second period, but two Princeton goals in less than a minute from Jody Pederson and Mark Magnowski built the lead to 4-1. Cornell would move back within a goal but Marc Hagel sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Five Tigers had multiple points in the win, including Magnowski and Hagel with a goal and assist each, and Derrick Pallis, Matt Arhontas and Kevin Lohry, who all had a pair of assists.
Zane Kalemba stood strong in the Tiger nets all weekend, stopping 55 of the 60 shots he faced in splitting the two games. Kalemba also made his 100th career appearance in goal for Princeton, tying a pair of former Tigers, Ron Dennis and Dave Stathos as the games played leaders for Princeton goalies. Kalemba will take over the mark with his next appearance. He has started in 98 of his 100 appearances.
Princeton's win over Cornell was its fourth this season against a ranked team as Princeton has wins over ninth-ranked UMass Lowell, fourth-ranked Cornell, 12th-ranked Quinnipiac and fifth-ranked Cornell. Princeton is 4-6 on the season against ranked opponents.
Princeton's split kept the Tigers within two points of eighth-place in the ECAC standings and the final home ice playoff spot. Princeton remains two points behind eighth-place Harvard and three behind seventh-place Quinnipiac and six points out of fourth-place in the standings. Princeton is tied in ninth with Brown.
Princeton visits Clarkson on Friday night looking to sweep the Golden Knights for the second straight season. Princeton is 26-69-5 all-time against Clarkson and is 4-34 in games in Potsdam. Princeton has won five of seven in the series, including a 4-1 win at home in November. Arhontas had two goals and an assist in the win.
Clarkson is 5-20-3 overall and 1-13-2 in the ECAC. The Golden Knights sit 12th in the league standings and have dropped their last eight games, including being swept last weekend at Union and Rensselaer. Clarkson last won on Jan. 8 against Alabama-Huntsville.
Princeton and St. Lawrence meet on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers look to even the season series. St. Lawrence leads the series 59-18-8 overall and 30-7-2 at home. The Saints are also 2-0-1 in their last three against the Tigers, although Princeton did win in its last visit to Canton, snapping a nine-game winless streak at Appleton Arena. St. Lawrence won 5-2 in Princeton in November.
St. Lawrence is 14-10-5 overall and 8-5-3 in the ECAC to sit fourth and hold down the last first-round bye payoff spot. The Saints are 4-2-2 in their last eight games, but managed just a point last weekend at Rensselaer and Union.
