Women's Tennis Upends No. 20 Vanderbilt, 4-3
February 20, 2010 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- If a confidence-building match was what the Princeton women's tennis team needed, the Tigers got it Saturday afternoon against No. 20 Vanderbilt in Jadwin Gym.
Coming off two straight losses in the ECAC tournament last weekend, Princeton, which began the spring season as the No. 1 team in the Northeast in the ITA rankings, fell to fourth among Ivy schools on the chart at No. 63.
But with a top-25 team coming to town, the Tigers rose to the occasion. Hilary Bartlett, Taylor Marable, Melissa Saiontz and Sarah Hoffman contributed to two doubles victories that gave Princeton the first point, and the Tigers split the singles matches to take the team victory.
Among Princeton's wins in singles were victories over two of Vanderbilt's four ranked players, by Bartlett over No. 39 Catherine Newman and by Rachel Saiontz over No. 79 Chelsea Preeg.
"We just competed really hard and I think maybe that was what was missing last weekend," first-year coach Megan Bradley said. "Hopefully the girls will take confidence from a win like that. It's a great win for our program and it shows the direction we want to be headed."
The doubles team of Bartlett and Marable, at No. 26, are Princeton's only entries on the ITA's singles or doubles rankings. The pair knocked off Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer at first doubles.
With a win over an SEC team to their credit, the Tigers will take the court again at 11 a.m. Saturday, facing Big East foe Syracuse.
