Fencing Teams Undefeated After First Day of Ivy Meets (with video)
February 22, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- Both Princeton fencing teams did all they could do on the first Sunday of Ivy League competition to end an Ivy title drought that extends to 2001.
Each team stands at 3-0 after wins over Penn, Brown and Yale. Next Sunday's competition at Penn will see the Tigers meet Columbia, Cornell (women only) and Harvard.
On the women's side, Columbia also ran through the first day of competition undefeated, setting up a pivotal match in next week's 11 a.m. opener. Behind Columbia and Princeton are Penn (3-1), Harvard (2-1), Cornell (1-3), Brown (0-3) and Yale (0-4).
On the men's side, Princeton is the only undefeated team, holding a lead over Yale (2-2), Harvard (1-1), Brown (1-2), Penn (1-2) and Columbia (0-2).
Video: Graham Wicas gets the clinching touch against Yale to tip the match to Princeton, 14-13.
Princeton began the day with wins over Penn, 18-9 on the men's side and 19-8 for the women. A sweep of Brown followed, by scores of 17-10 for the men and 21-6 for the women. Princeton then closed the day with its closest match on the men's side, 14-13 over Yale, while the women topped the Bulldogs 17-10.
Against Yale, the Princeton men rallied from 13-11 down when freshman Jonathan Yergler and sophomore Alexander Mills won to square the match before junior Graham Wicas, the 2009 NCAA silver medalist in epee, won to claim the deciding 14th victory.
Collectively, the men won 49 of 81 bouts and the women won 57 of 81. Men's epee, women's foil and women's epee each won 22 of 27 bouts. Wicas was the most successful men's fencer on the first day, going 7-1 plus a forfeit victory, while freshman foilist Brianna Martin was 8-0 for the women.
