Tennis Tigers Take On Big Ten This Weekend
February 25, 2010 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Three Big Ten opponents are on the agenda for Princeton's pair of ITA top-75 tennis teams this weekend.
Men's tennis (2-3) will begin the weekend at 10 a.m. Saturday against No. 44 Northwestern (6-3) on Jadwin Gym's indoor courts. The Tigers are ranked No. 75 in the Feb. 23 ITA rankings and opened their home schedule last weekend with a 4-3 win over St. John's. Princeton and Northwestern have met only once, a Princeton win back in 1986 at a UC Irvine-hosted event.
Women's tennis (6-3) is ranked No. 44, jumping 19 spots after a weekend that included a win over then-No. 20 Vanderbilt followed by a victory over Syracuse the next day. No. 55 Minnesota (6-3) will play host to two Princeton matches, first against Iowa (5-1) at 1 p.m. CT Saturday and then against the host Golden Gophers at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.
Princeton and Iowa each have one entry in the ITA individual rankings, the Tigers with the doubles team of Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable at No. 26, and Iowa with Sonja Molnar as the No. 87 singles player. Princeton has faced Minnesota and Iowa a total of four times, with three of those meetings coming in the 1990s and all three in San Diego, Calif. The Tigers defeated Minnesota in 1991 and lost to Iowa in 1996 and 1999 before defeating the Hawkeyes 5-2 last season at the ITA team indoor competition at Baylor.
