PRINCETON (2/27/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team closed the regular season with a 7-3 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Mark Magnowski led all Tigers with four points-two goals and two assists-in the win.
The Tigers went into the game needing a win and some help in order to secure home ice advantage in the first round of the ECAC playoffs. Princeton did its part, moving ahead of Harvard into eighth place in the league standings, and the Tigers got help from St. Lawrence, which edged the Crimson 4-3.
Princeton went on top just 1:18 into the contest when Matt Arhontas redirected a Magnowski pass for his seventh goal of the season off the rush. Mike Kramer also had an assist on the goal as all three members of the line had multiple points in the win.
Princeton built its lead to 4-0 with three straight goals to begin the second period before Brown scored the final two of the frame. Magnowski followed up his own rebound 1:33 into the second to make it 2-0 and a power-play goal from Taylor Fedun and an even-strength marker from Will MacDonald that trickled through brown goaltender Mike Clemente made it 4-0 midway through the game.
Goals from Jesse Fratkin and Jack Maclellan in the second half of the second period allowed Brown to cut the lead in half.
Princeton scored the game's next two goals to rebuild the four-goal cushion. Marc Hagel redirected a Derrick Pallis point shot at 11:13 and three minutes later Pallis scored a shorthanded goal into the empty net as Brown looked to take advantage of a power play. Aaron Volpatti stuffed a rebound in to make the score 6-4 but Magnowski sealed the win with another power-play marker at 16:25.
Zane Kalemba made 20 saves for the win while Clemente stopped 46 in the loss. Princeton outshot Brown 53-23.
The win moved Princeton to 12-14-3 overall and 8-12-2 in the ECAC. The Tigers will finish eighth in the final standings and will host ninth-place Harvard next weekend in a best of three first round series.
