PRINCETON (3/5/10) - Harvard scored four goals in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 4-2 in the opening game of the first-round of the ECAC playoffs on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Trailing in the third period, the Crimson scored three goals in a six-minute span midway through the period to take over the game and then added a late insurance tally.
Princeton built a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes of action on goals from sophomore Marc Hagel and senior Mark Magnowski. Hagel made it 1-0 late in the first period when he redirected a Matt Godlewski shot past Crimson netminder Kyle Richter for his seventh goal of the year. Dan Bartlett carried the puck into the Harvard end and fed Godlewski along the blue line for the point shot.
Magnowski made it 2-0 at 12:22 of the second when he banked a shot in off of Richter from behind the goal line. Jody Pederson and Mike Kramer had assists on the breakout and Magnowski carried the puck into the Harvard end on a 2 on 1. He attempted a pass that was blocked behind the goal line and chased it down and banked it in for his 10th of the season.
Princeton outshot Harvard 25-20 through two periods and appeared in control, but the Crimson battled back in the third period. Daniel Moriarty won the race to a rebound at 8:05 and knocked it above Princeton netminder Zane Kalemba to put Harvard on the scoreboard and Daniel Biega scored through a screen at 10:35 to even the game.
Michael Del Mauro then scored the game winner at 14:05, putting the rebound of Jack Christian's blocked shot into the Tiger goal for his first tally of the season. Michael Biega then completed the scoring at 17:50.
Richter made 33 saves for the win while Kalemba stopped 31 in the loss. Shots were even at 35 apiece for the game.
Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, which resumes on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Harvard improves to 8-19-3 with the win while Princeton is now 12-15-3.
