Women's Tennis Rebounds to Defeat Minnesota, 5-2
February 28, 2010 | Women's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS -- Bouncing back from a loss to Iowa Saturday, the No. 44 Princeton women's tennis team earned a Big Ten split Sunday with a 5-2 win over Minnesota.
If the weekend were officially a tri-meet, with all three schools gathering on Minnesota's campus to face each other, it would have been a tie. No. 55 Minnesota started the weekend with a 6-1 victory over Iowa Friday to open its conference season, followed by Iowa's 4-3 win over Princeton Saturday and the Tigers' win over the Gophers Sunday.
Princeton began Sunday with a doubles-point win, courtesy of Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable at first and Sarah Hoffman and Melissa Saiontz at third. Singles wins by Bartlett, Melissa Saiontz, Rachel Saiontz and Blakely Ashley completed the team victory, with the Saiontz sisters' wins being particularly grueling. Melissa Saiontz won two tiebreakers to hold on to a pair of 7-6 set wins, and Rachel Saiontz rallied from a first-set loss to win in a tiebreak in set two and clear the third set 6-2.
Princeton will return home for a Friday-Saturday weekend at Jadwin Gym hosting William & Mary and Marshall.
