March 05, 2010 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Winning five of six singles matches, the No. 45 Princeton women's tennis team picked up its fourth victory over a fellow ranked team this season in defeating No. 59 William & Mary 5-2 Friday afternoon on Jadwin Gym's indoor courts.
Princeton fell behind after the doubles point, when the Tribe's Anik Cepeda and Carmen Pop won at second doubles to tip the point to the visitors. The Tigers squared the match with Blakely Ashley's win at fifth singles, though William & Mary pulled back ahead with what turned out to be its only singles victory of the day, Pop's win over Rachel Saiontz at third.
The last four matches on court all went Princeton's way. Taylor Marable helped Princeton move back into a tie by pulling out a three-set win at fourth, followed by Hilary Bartlett winning the last two sets over the Tribe's Ragini Acharya at first, Sarah Hoffman straight-setting Katie Kargl at sixth, and Melissa Saiontz getting the fifth point with a three-set win over Marlen Mesgarzdeh at second.
Princeton improves to 8-4 on the season and will face yet another ranked team Saturday when the Thundering Herd from No. 28 Marshall put their undefeated record on the line at 10 a.m. in Jadwin Gym.
