Fencers Get Maximum 12 Bids to NCAA Finals
March 17, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- For the first time since 2000, the Princeton fencing teams have drawn the maximum 12 bids to the NCAA finals.
The Tigers are one of five schools to maximize their representation, alongside Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame and host Harvard.
The championship is decided as a combined men's-women's event with 24 individuals competing in each of the six weapons (men's epee, women's epee, men's foil, women's foil, men's saber, women's saber), and each victory against the other 23 fencers in his or her weapon counts as a point. The school with the most individual match victories will be the NCAA team champion.
Representing Princeton will be:
Men's Epee: Graham Wicas (Jr.), Jonathan Yergler (Fr.)
Men's Foil: David Mandle (So.), Alexander Mills (So.)
Men's Saber: Thomas Abend (Sr.), John Stogin (Jr.)
Women's Epee: Phoebe Caldwell (Fr.), Susannah Scanlan (So.)
Women's Foil: Brianna Martin (Fr.), Rocky Rothenberg (So.)
Women's Saber: Joanna Cichomski (Fr.), Eliza Stone (Fr.)
Princeton won its first Ivy League titles since 2001 last month when both the men's and women's teams ran through the league undefeated. The Tigers were ranked No. 4 in the nation in the last coaches poll released in mid-February, and all 13 Ivy programs between men's and women's were either ranked or receiving votes.
The Ivies are well represented at the NCAAs, with 51 of the 144 bids belonging to league fencers. Competition at the NCAA finals will begin Mar. 25 and run through Mar. 28.
