Fencers Receive National Honors After Ivy Victories
March 02, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- Princeton's fencers have received national notice after twin undefeated runs through the Ivy League were capped Sunday with either program's first league championships since 2001.
Freshman Jonathan Yergler was named the national fencer of the week by CollegeFencing360.com, and freshman Brianna Martin received honorable mention from the Web site.
Yergler, an epeeist, posted the best winning percentage of any Ivy men's fencer over the league season, going 11-1 (.917). Martin, a foilist, had both the best winning percentage and most wins in league matches, going 15-1 (.938).
The Tigers will be away from competition this weekend as they prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Drew University March 13, but their results to this point have been quite impressive. Princeton's men closed the dual-meet season on a 14-match winning streak, tying a program-best from last season, and a 21-3 record. The 24 matches are a program record, and so are the 21 victories that bettered last season's 17-3 mark.
Princeton's women ended the dual-meet season 27-3 and winners of 19 in a row. As with the men, the Tiger women fenced a record 30 duals this season and topped the previous wins record by 11 victories, bettering the 16-6 record from last season and the 16-2 mark from 1999-2000. The 19 straight victories tops the 15 straight Princeton won in the 1999-2000 season.
Both Princeton teams are ranked No. 4 in the last USFCA poll, released before Princeton won the Ivy title. Every Ivy League team is ranked or receiving votes in both the men's and women's 10-team polls.
The Tigers are off this weekend from competition as they prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Drew University on Mar. 13.
