Fencers Stand Fourth at NCAA Championship
March 25, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- One day into the four-day NCAA fencing championship, the Princeton women have the Tiger fencing program in fourth place in the team standings.
The women competed in the first four of seven rounds of the three weapons, with the final three rounds to come Friday along with the medal bouts. No Tiger is currently in position to advance to the medal round, which takes the top four fencers from each weapon, but a few are close. Freshman saberist Eliza Stone and freshman foilist are in sixth place, and sophomore epeeist Susannah Scanlan is in seventh.
Additionally, freshman saberist Joanna Cichomski is in ninth place, freshman epeeist Phoebe Caldwell is in 16th place, and sophomore foilist Rocky Rothenberg is in 18th through the first four rounds as Princeton had the full complement of six women's fencers competing.
So far, Princeton has upheld the Ivy League title it won last month by taking the top finish among the seven women's Ivy programs, all of which are in the top 18 of the NCAA standings at present. Princeton has won 47 matches, one more than Harvard and 11 fewer than first-place St. John's. Notre Dame and Penn State are tied for second with 54 votes.
In the latest USFCA poll, released Mar. 19, Princeton's women were ranked No. 3 behind Notre Dame and Penn State and just ahead of Northwestern and St. John's.
Since the NCAA championship became a combined event in 1990, Princeton has never finished higher than fourth, doing so in 1994, 1996 and 1999.
