Fencers Remain in Fourth Following Women's Competition
March 26, 2010 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Princeton's female fencers have led the team to a fourth-place standing midway through the NCAA championship. The Tigers are the top Ivy League team with the men's competition still to come Saturday and Sunday.
St. John's, Notre Dame and Penn State are in a tight race for the team championship, with the Red Storm's 92 victories just outpacing the Irish (91) and the Nittany Lions (90). Princeton, with 76 victories, is next, just ahead of Ivy foe Harvard (75).
A fourth-place finish would tie Princeton's best since the event became a combined men's-women's event in 1990. Princeton finished fourth in 1994, 1996 and 1999.
No Tiger women qualified for the top-four medalist bouts, though a few were very close. In the epee, freshman Eliza Stone placed eighth while fellow rookie Joanna Cichomski finished 13th. In the foil, freshman Brianna Martin took sixth while sophomore Rocky Rothenberg finished 15th. Among saberists, sophomore Susannah Scanlan was seventh while freshman Phoebe Caldwell placed 15th.
The top-12 finishes afforded Stone, Martin and Scanlan All-America honors. It is Scanlan's second All-America standing in as many seasons at Princeton, while of course being the first for the two freshmen Stone and Martin.
All seven of the Ivy's women's programs remained among the top 18 teams, with the Ivy taking half of the top sixth with Columbia standing just behind Princeton and Harvard.
