Both head coach Paul Rassam and co-captains Justine Hausheer and Lauren Sykora felt excited about the progress made by the Princeton women's lightweights during the offseason. Through one week, their optimism seems well-founded; Princeton topped both MIT and the Philadelphia University openweights to open the 2010 season.
Princeton won two of three races on Lake Carnegie Saturday morning, including the key varsity eight showdown. Princeton finished the varsity eight race in 7:05.2, topping both Philadelphia (7:17.7) and MIT (7:21.3).
The second varsity eight would be a slightly tighter race, but Princeton still managed a comfortable win. The Tigers won in 7:41.8, while MIT finished second in 7:48.2.
In the 3V4/N4 race, Philadelphia won in 8:23.9, while MIT placed second in 8:41.4. Princeton placed third in 8:48.0.
Princeton is off next weekend, but will make its annual trip to Redwood City, Calif., on April 10 to compete against two of its top competitors in the national rowing scene. The Tigers will take on both reigning champion Wisconsin and Stanford that Saturday before returning the next two weekends for home regatts against both Georgetown and Harvard.
