Softball Swept by Rutgers in Home Opener
March 27, 2010 | Softball
PRINCETON -- A stalled rally kept Princeton's softball team from saving a split at Class of 1895 Field Saturday after Rutgers prevailed in the opener 9-4, holding on 4-3 in a nine-inning nightcap.
Rutgers 9, Princeton 4
A four-run second inning propelled Rutgers (12-15) in Saturday's first game, overcoming the first two home runs of rookie catcher Sarah Rounsifer's career to give the Scarlet Knights a 9-4 win.
Rutgers' largest lead against rookie pitcher Liza Kuhn and the Tigers (6-14) was 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before Rounsifer's second home run, a two-run shot, brought Princeton within five. Each team pushed one across in the seventh, with sophomore Nicole Ontiveros hitting her first home run of the season.
Rutgers 4, Princeton 3 (9 inn.)
Kelsey Quist's first-inning RBI-single put Princeton on the board for its first lead of the day, but the Tigers needed more to fuel a late rally before losing 4-3 in nine innings.
Rutgers got two runs against senior Jamie Lettire in the third to take a lead it would lose but never fully cede to Princeton. The Scarlet Knights pulled ahead 3-1 after a bases-loaded walk in the fifth before senior Collette Abbott's RBI-single cut the lead back to one.
Quist's sacrifice fly RBI tied it up in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers couldn't muster much against Rutgers reliever Nicole Lindley, who threw the last two frames.
Following a stalemated eighth after Princeton got a lead-off single by Megan Weidrick, one of nine runners the Tigers stranded in the nightcap, Rutgers scored what would ultimately be the winning run on Mandy Craig's two-out RBI-double.
Princeton will host Lafayette (7-9), victims of back-to-back shutouts Saturday at Villanova, for a doubleheader Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
