Tennis Tigers to Face Cornell, Columbia in Final Ivy Weekend
April 14, 2010 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Cornell and Columbia will provide the opposition for the Princeton tennis teams this weekend as the Tigers close out Ivy League campaigns that are at least assured winning records.
Princeton's men (8-11, 4-1 Ivy) will be home first, hosting No. 70 Cornell (16-7, 3-2) at 2 p.m. Friday. At the same time, the No. 32 Princeton women (18-5, 5-0) will play at Cornell (11-9, 1-4).
The men's team has a winning Ivy League record for the first time since 2007, when Princeton finished 5-2. Heading into the weekend, the Tiger men are tied with Columbia for first place in the Ivy at 4-1 with Yale even in the loss column at 3-1.
Sunday, the women will be home against Columbia (9-12, 0-5) for a 12 p.m. start. Princeton's women will clinch at least a share of the Ivy title with a win over Cornell Friday and would accomplish their first undefeated Ivy season since 2000. After last year's shared Ivy title between Princeton and Harvard, the win would give Princeton its first outright league crown since 2000 and its first back-to-back titles since 1993 and 1994.
With the new ITA rankings announced Tuesday, Princeton's entries on the singles and doubles lists shifted, as did its team ranking. Despite being on an eight-match win streak, the Tigers fell four spots from 28th, while Hilary Bartlett moved up nine spots to No. 63 on the singles list, while Bartlett and Marable moved from 19th to 26th on the doubles chart.
Princeton's men will play at No. 46 Columbia (14-4, 4-1) Sunday in a 2 p.m. start. The Lions are coming off a loss to Yale last Saturday, while Princeton's men rebounded from their first Ivy loss of the season, to Harvard last Friday, in a win over Dartmouth Saturday.
While both Princeton home matches are scheduled for the Lenz Tennis Center, they will be played indoors at Jadwin Gym if rain interferes either day.
