Women's Tennis to Learn NCAA Opponent May 4
April 28, 2010 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- The back-to-back Ivy League champion Princeton women's tennis team will learn its NCAA tournament destination on May 4 at approximately 5:00 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
The first-round matches will take place on May 14 on one of 16 campus sites, locations that will be announced along with the rest of the field.
With a sweep of Cornell and Columbia on April 16 and 18, the Tigers clinched their second straight Ivy title, marking the first back-to-back league crowns for the program since 1993 and 1994. After sharing the 2009 title with Harvard, the outright 2010 crown is the program's first since 2000.
The Ivy title gained Princeton, currently ranked No. 32 in the nation, a berth in the NCAA tournament for the fourth time. In 1983, Princeton made its first NCAA appearance, losing 9-0 to Stanford in Albuquerque, N.M. Princeton returned in 2000, losing 5-1 to Tennessee at William & Mary. The Tigers came closest to winning an NCAA match last season, taking Florida International to the final point before losing 4-3 at the University of Miami.
During the 2010 spring season, Princeton posted a 20-5 dual-meet record, marking a program-best win total. Of those 20 wins, 10 came in Princeton's 13 matches against fellow ranked teams.
Along with the No. 32 team ranking, which is the highest position of any team east of Michigan and north of Virginia, the Tigers have Hilary Bartlett ranked No. 77 in singles and Bartlett and Marable ranked No. 27 in doubles as of the April 27 ITA release.
The NCAA's singles and doubles tournament selections will be announced the following day, May 5, at 6 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. Last season, Bartlett and Marable were chosen for the NCAA doubles tournament, the first time a Princeton player had been included in the singles or doubles event since 2002.
