Stone, Scanlan Win Bronze at NAC Fencing Event

PRINCETON -- Freshman Eliza Stone and sophomore Susannah Scanlan won bronze in their weapons at the season's final North American Cup fencing event in Virginia Beach, Va., April 23-26.
In the saber, Stone finished higher than all but two of the 67 competitors, while in the epee, Scanlan placed third in a 120-woman event.
The pair were only two of several current and former Princeton alumni fencing at the NAC meet. Also in women's epee, Maya Lawrence '02 finished fourth, freshman Hannah Safford placed 49th, and Kira Hohensee '06 placed 63rd.
On the men's side, Tommi Hurme '08 also won bronze, tying for third in the epee and fencing against Soren Thompson '05 in the round of 16 to advance. Thompson finished 13th, and current sophomore Cooper Gegan placed 148th in the 218-man field.
In the men's saber competition, current junior John Stogin placed 65th of 129 competitors.
The NAC events help top fencers earn points toward representing the United States in international competitions which take place during the spring and summer.
