Cornell Sweeps Softball in Season's Final Road Contests
April 30, 2010 | Softball
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell swept a pair from the Princeton softball team, 8-1 and 7-4, Friday afternoon in Ithaca, N.Y., clinching the Ivy South division in the process.
The teams will get together again Sunday to complete the regular season with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Class of 1895 Field.
Penn swept Columbia in the other Ivy South doubleheader, but Cornell (32-11, 16-2 Ivy) remained four games ahead of the Quakers, while the Tigers fell to 11-31 overall and 5-13 in the Ivy League. The Ivy North could be decided Saturday when Harvard opens its four-game series against Dartmouth in Cambridge if the Crimson are able to sweep the Big Green. At present, though the Crimson have two games in hand, Cornell has a two-game lead on Harvard for the right to host the Ivy League Championship Series next weekend.
Game 1: Cornell 8, Princeton 1
Princeton held a lead in both games Friday, but all of the Tigers' runs in each game were scored in the first inning and the Big Red came roaring back.
Alex Peyton's run-scoring double in the first inning of the first game put Princeton on top, but Cornell retook the lead on a two-run home run by Elise Menaker in the third and increased its advantage on the way to an 8-1 victory. Jamie Lettire took the loss for the Tigers in the circle, and counterpart Elizabeth Dalrymple allowed only two hits and two walks the rest of the way after the first-inning back-to-back doubles that brought home Princeton's run.
Lettire had two of Princeton's four hits in the opener, going 2 for 2 with a walk.
Game 2: Cornell 7, Princeton 4
A run-scoring single by Lettire followed by a three-run home run from Kelsey Quist staked Princeton to a four-run lead in its first at bat, but Cornell began chipping away in the bottom of the first and overtook Princeton in a 7-4 Big Red win.
After Cornell got one run back in the bottom of the first and two more in the second, Alyson Intihar tied it with a run-scoring double in the third and Shannon Crane's two-run single put Cornell ahead for good against Liza Kuhn and the Tigers.
Lettire again had a multi-hit game in the nightcap, going 2 for 3 to complete a 4-for-5 day.
