May 04, 2010 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- The Princeton women's tennis team will open the NCAA tournament against Virginia in Charlottesville on Friday, May 14, the NCAA announced.
Virginia will host four teams in the field of 64, with Duke and Long Island joining Princeton and the Cavaliers. Duke is the seeded team in the group of four, 10th of the 16 seeded teams in the bracket. The winners of the two matches will play Saturday, May 15, for the right to advance to the round of 16 at the University of Georgia.
Princeton's match against Virginia will begin at 2 p.m. on May 14, pending the finish of the Duke-Long Island match, which begins at 11 a.m. The second-round match will take place May 15 at 4 p.m.
Princeton (20-5) is ranked No. 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the May 3 poll. Sophomore Hilary Bartlett is ranked No. 78 in Division I by the ITA as a singles player and No. 27 in doubles alongside junior Taylor Marable.
No. 27 Virginia (14-9) has one ranked singles player, No. 57 Lindsey Hardenbergh, and two ranked doubles teams at No. 25 (Jennifer Stevens and Hana Tomlijanovic) and No. 51 (Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra).
Harvard joins Princeton as Ivy teams in the tournament, with the Crimson facing Georgia at Clemson.
Princeton's 20 wins are a program record, and the Tigers won 10 of their 13 matches against fellow ranked teams. The Ivy title Princeton won with a 7-0 league record is the program's second straight, after sharing last year's title with Harvard, and first outright title since 2000. The back-to-back titles are Princeton's first pair since 1993 and 1994.
The NCAA bid is Princeton's fourth. In 1983, Princeton made its first NCAA appearance, losing 9-0 to Stanford in Albuquerque, N.M. Princeton returned in 2000, losing 5-1 to Tennessee at William & Mary. The Tigers came closest to winning an NCAA match last season, taking Florida International to the final point before losing 4-3 at the University of Miami.
Selections for the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments will be announced Wednesday.
