Women's Soccer Spring Update: Captains and Awards
May 06, 2010 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- The Princeton women's soccer team has named its captains for the 2010 season and has given out its awards for the 2009 campaign as the team heads into the summer break after winning all three of its spring games.
Melissa Seitz '10 was named the team's MVP after starting every game for the Tigers for the third straight season and captaining a defense that helped hold Ivy League opponents to 0.66 goals per game and 0.78 goals per game on the season overall. Seitz was selected as a first-team All-Ivy League honoree in her final season.
Marci Pasenello '10 was selected as the Don Betterton "Unsung Hero" award winner after playing in all 16 games and starting 10 in her final season, scoring a goal in Princeton's 3-0 win over Hartford on Sept. 23. Pasenello was also the winner of the Kathy Kobler "Kobes" Garrett '91 award, named for the late soccer and softball player "whose generosity, positive attitude, genuine consideration for others, and quiet energy makes her essential to the success of the team."
Two midfielders shared the Most Improved Player award, with Lauren Whatley '11 and Rachel Saunders '13 getting the honors. In less than a week in October, Whatley scored the goals in two 1-0 wins, defeating American and Brown. Two weeks later, Whatley assisted on the goal in a 1-0 win over Cornell. Saunders played in 11 games, starting two, and scored a goal in the win over Hartford.
For the 2010 fall season, soon-to-be senior Kayleigh Iatarola will return as captain and will be joined by fellow '11 Alex Valerio.
