June 30, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J.
(6/30/10) - Princeton University head men's soccer coach Jim Barlow has
announced the 2010 men's soccer schedule.
The Tigers will play a total of 17 games with 10 home games including
the Princeton Tournament in late September. Princeton's non-league slate
contains 10 teams from four conferences. The Ivy League schedule begins on
October 2 and will be another tough challenge as four of the eight teams made
appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2009.
Princeton begins its 2010 campaign at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday,
September 4. The Tigers have won
the last three outings including last year's thrilling 2-1 double overtime
victory that saw Princeton's Teddy Schneider score on a penalty kick with 0.8
seconds remaining in the home opener.
Three days later Princeton makes the short trip to Lehigh for a mid-week game on September 7. The teams have split the last two meetings with Princeton winning 1-0 in last year's season opener to increase its all-time series record to 32-7-1.
American will be Princeton's opponent in the home opener on Friday, September 10 at 7 p.m. The Tigers posted a 3-0 shutout over the Eagles on the road last year with three different goal scorers.
One week later, Princeton renews its rivalry with Georgetown on Friday, September 17 with a 7:30 p.m., game. The teams have met just two times before in 1998 and 2002 with Georgetown winning 4-0 and 3-2. The Hoyas finished last season 9-8-2 overall and fourth in the blue division of the BIG EAST.
The second of three BIG EAST opponents follows with a game at Villanova on September 19. Like the Hoyas, the Wildcats went 9-8-2 and was fourth in the red division of the conference. Princeton owns a 2-1 record in the series with Villanova, winning matching 3-0 games in 1999 and 2001 before giving up a 1-0 game in 2003.
Princeton will begin a five-game homestand on September 24 with the commencement of the Princeton Invitational. The Invitational returns for the third straight year, with Adelphi, Penn and Richmond participating. Princeton will face Richmond on Friday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m., and Adelphi on Sunday, September 26 at 2:30 p.m. Princeton and Richmond will be meeting for the first time. The Spiders posted a 5-11-2 record last season. Adelphi went 13-2-4 and was the Atlantic Soccer Conference champions. Princeton is 8-2-1 against the Blank Panthers all time but hasn't beaten Adelphi since a 4-3 overtime game 2007.
The Ivy League schedule begins with Princeton hosting Dartmouth on Saturday, October 2 at 6 p.m. The Tigers look to turnaround a three-game winless streak against the Big Green, who have appeared in the last three NCAA Tournaments. Princeton fell 4-2 last year in Hanover in the rainiest and wet-soaked game of the season.
Looking to build on a two-game winning streak, Princeton hosts Seton Hall on Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m. The teams have played tightly the last five years with three games being decided by one goal.
Brown will visit Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium on Saturday, October 9 at 4 p.m. The Bears went 11-3-5 last year and finished second in the Ivy League, while making the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in a decade. Brown has won the last four meetings with Princeton including a 4-2 game in 2009.
Lafayette, a team that posted a 10-7-2 record last year, will host Princeton on October 12. The teams haven't met since 1998. The series in which Princeton leads 24-3-3, left off with the Tigers winning the last four games by a combined 10-2 score.
Princeton looks to expand on its seven-game unbeaten streak over Columbia when it travels to city on October 16. The Tigers have held the Lions winless since 2002, going 5-0-2 with six of those games being shutouts. The series with Columbia is the oldest in Princeton's history as it dates back to 1907.
One of the most highly anticipated games will be on Saturday, October 23 when Princeton hosts Harvard at 4 p.m. The Ivy League champion went 14-4-1 overall last year and loss just one league game - to Princeton. The Crimson reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009, their fourth straight appearance in the post season. Princeton owns a 42-38-8 record against Harvard in a series that began in 1909.
The team will play two opponents in a swing through Central New York. First up is an Ivy League meeting with Cornell on October 30, followed by a stop at Colgate on November 2. Princeton holds a 48-35-12 record against the Big Red and is 3-1-1 in the last five games. Princeton and Colgate have met just twice and have split the meetings with the Tigers earning a 3-0 victory in 2009 and falling 1-0 in 2007.
The final home game of the season will be with rival Penn on Saturday, November 6 at 7 p.m. Princeton defeated Penn 3-1 last year in Philadelphia giving Coach Barlow his 100th victory as head coach and extended its streak over Penn to three straight.
A game at Yale on November 13 marks the final game of the
regular season. The Tigers earned a 3-0 shutout over the Bulldogs last year live
on the Fox Soccer Channel and sits seven games back in the all-time series,
35-42-22.
The NCAA Tournament begins with first round action on Friday, November 19
and concludes with the College Cup
in Santa Barbara, Calif., Dec. 10 and 12.
