July 13, 2010 | Wrestling
Princeton head wrestling coach Chris Ayres, in his debut assignment with USA Wrestling, helped lead the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Junior Championships this past weekend in Managua, Nicaragua.
The U.S. was the team champion in Greco-Roman, and placed second in both the women's freestyle and men's freestyle competitions during the three-day event. The men's teams combined for three individual gold medals and five silvers between the two competitions, which concluded Sunday with the freestyle championships.
"I was really proud of the way our guys competed against some tough international teams," said Ayres, who led Princeton to its best season in decades last year and brings in a top recruiting class for the upcoming season. "Being associated with the team and U.S.A. Wrestling has been an honor, and it makes me all the more excited to get back to Princeton and keep building upon our positive momentum."
