Kropp Highlights Strong Swimming Summer With Junior National Title
August 13, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
It's been a few months since the Princeton women's swimming and diving team won the Ivy League title during a thrilling three-day championship weekend. The feeling of excitement hasn't worn off for head coach Susan Teeter, who has seen both current and incoming members of her program have brilliant summer performances, especially incoming freshman Andrea Kropp.
Kropp has had two impressive performances recently. At the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships, Kropp finished fifth in the 200 breast 'A' championship final with a lifetime best swim of 2:27.63. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni won the race, while former Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard placed second. Kropp was within a second of placing third and didn't lose to a swimmer under the age of 23.
Kropp also reached the bonus final in the 100 breast and placed 18th overall, while she finished 28th in the 400 IM. Kropp is one of the standouts in a strong Class of 2014 group that was ranked 13th nationally. Three of her future teammates — rising senior Megan Waters and rising sophomores Sarah Furgatch and Carter Stephens — also competed at the national championships. Waters, one of the top sprinters in the Ivy League and the reigning 100 free league champion, had Top 100 finishes in the 50, 100 and 100 back, as well as a Top 25 finish in the 4x100.
Kropp, along with other members of the heralded Class of 2014, also competed at the 2010 Speedo Junior National Championships. Kropp set a meet record in winning the 200 breast title by more than 1.5 seconds and added a 12th-place finish in the 100 breast.
Classmate Lisa Boyce also qualified for a championship final and finished eighth in the 100 free. Boyce, Kropp and Furgatch joined Class of 2014 members Rebecca Lewinson and Maureen McCotter at the Junior Nationals, which conclude Friday night.
