PRINCETON (9/11/10) - The 18th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team raced to a 5-0 lead on Fordham and never looked back in a 9-5 win over the Rams on Saturday morning at DeNunzio Pool. It was Princeton's second-straight win after dropping its season opener.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, building a five-goal lead in less than six minutes of game action. Tommy Parolin opened the scoring with a man-up goal and counter goals from Mike Helou and Chris Cottrell made the score 3-0. Goals from Tommy Donahue on a counter and Tim Wenzlau on an exclusion helped Princeton extend its lead to five goals.
Fordham scored the game's next two goals to get within three by the end of the opening period but could get no closer as the Tigers scored three straight goals to start the second half.
Cottrell, Wenzlau and Donahue all scored two goals in the game while Helou, Parolin and Matt Hale added single markers. Goalkeeper Mike Merlone led the team with three assists in the win while both Donahue and Hale added a pair. Parolin won all four sprints.
Merlone played three quarters in goal and made eight saves for the win. Ben Dearborn made six saves in 6:35 of the fourth quarter and Tyler Amina made a save in the final 1:25.
Princeton was three of six with a man up in the game and also converted on its lone 5-meter shot from Hale. Fordham was one of three with the man advantage and had its 5-meter attempt stopped by Dearborn in the fourth quarter.
Princeton is now 2-1 on the season and plays its final game of the Princeton Invitational on Saturday night against Harvard. The Tigers will also play NYAC in an exhibition game on Sunday.
